What’s going on in the world today?
Pollution, while it is a detrimental issue in the world today, is still an issue that is neglected by countless individuals – from children to working adults. In
With our planet undergoing climate change, one of Singapore’s largest contributors to pollution and carbon emissions is traffic and transport. Even living in Singapore, where the transport system is extremely advanced and integrated, traffic pollution is inevitable, mainly due to the countless number of families that own their own vehicles.
In August 2021, the results of the Sixth Assessment Report, from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) revealed that global warming is advancing throughout the globe more quickly than expected.
As of 2019 alone, there are over one million cars on the road. Although Singapore is a country whereby the transport system connects the city end-to-end, most people still feel the need to own their own personal vehicle to move around. This being said, traffic pollution and transport are the third largest contributor to pollution with about 14.4%.
It really may not seem like we are doing much harm, but essentially, each time we choose to hop into a taxi instead of choosing a more environmentally friendly mode of transport (like walking or cycling), we are slowly and gradually contributing to the emissions of greenhouse gases and the pollution levels in the world.
So, what are the steps that we can each start taking as an individual to help combat climate change today?
The Solution
Start riding a bike. It’s really that simple. By opting for bikes, we can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from the transport system, which will inevitably decelerate the effects of climate change and reduce the risk of extreme and unpredictable weather.
The solution to this very problem would be to adopt alternative methods of transportation to our usual destinations like school or work. Alternative and more environmentally friendly methods would include walking, public transport, and cycling.
Cycling is a mode of transportation that has become much more popular in Singapore, significantly so especially in the past 2 years, following the time of the Covid-19 Pandemic. There was up to 30% rise in the number of cyclists on the road in 2019 alone.
Apart from it being much more environmentally friendly, there is a myriad of other benefits that stem from cycling. It is a very health friendly mode of transportation. By taking up cycling, it helps to increase cardiovascular fitness as well as improve joint mobility.
The Singapore government has made the city interconnected via The Park Connector Network (PCN), which is an island-wide network of linear green corridors linking major parks and nature areas across Singapore. Through this, it allows further and greater connectivity between major towns.
Singaporeans can effectively take advantage of the PCN and opt to use it to get to places like school and work using a bike. This is adequately attributed to the fact that these PCNs are skillfully woven through most of the major ‘towns’ in Singapore. This will no doubt facilitate safe and healthy commuting among not just adults, but school-going children as well.
So, by hopping on a bike whenever we need to get around, we are essentially making a massive contribution to saving the planet, solely based on the evidence that bike travels result in drastically lower emissions of greenhouse gases. Do visit our Online Store to see top selling bike accessories
