Garmin Speed Sensor 2 & Cadence Sensor 2 FAQ

Garmin Speed Sensor 2 & Cadence Sensor 2 FAQ

Everything you need to know about the Garmin Speed Sensor 2 and Cadence Sensor 2 combo, available at Bikers.SG — Singapore's cycling tech specialist.

General

What is included in the Garmin Speed Sensor 2 & Cadence Sensor 2 bundle?

The bundle includes one Garmin Speed Sensor 2 and one Garmin Cadence Sensor 2. The Speed Sensor 2 attaches to the hub of your rear wheel, while the Cadence Sensor 2 attaches to the crank arm of your bike.

What is the difference between the Speed Sensor 2 and Cadence Sensor 2?

The Speed Sensor 2 measures your wheel speed and calculates your riding speed and distance. The Cadence Sensor 2 measures your pedalling cadence in revolutions per minute (RPM). Together they provide comprehensive cycling metrics for training and performance tracking.

Are these sensors compatible with my Garmin cycling computer?

Yes — the Garmin Speed Sensor 2 and Cadence Sensor 2 are compatible with all current Garmin cycling computers including the Edge 550, Edge 850, Edge 1050, Edge 1040, and Edge 540/840 series. They connect via ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart.

Can I use these sensors with non-Garmin devices?

Yes. Both sensors support ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart (BLE), making them compatible with third-party cycling computers, smartphones, and training apps including Zwift, TrainerRoad, and Wahoo devices that support these protocols.

Setup & Installation

How do I install the Speed Sensor 2?

The Speed Sensor 2 uses a rubber band mount and attaches directly to the hub of your rear wheel. No magnets are required — it uses an accelerometer to detect wheel rotation. Wrap the band around the hub, secure the sensor, and pair it with your device.

How do I install the Cadence Sensor 2?

The Cadence Sensor 2 also uses a rubber band mount and attaches to the crank arm of your bike. No magnets are required. Attach it to either crank arm, ensure it sits flat, and pair it with your device.

Do I need to calibrate the Speed Sensor 2?

You need to enter your wheel circumference in your Garmin device settings for accurate speed and distance readings. Garmin devices include a wheel size chart, or you can measure your tyre circumference manually.

How do I pair the sensors with my Garmin Edge?

On your Garmin Edge, go to Settings → Sensors & Accessories → Add Sensor. Select Speed Sensor or Cadence Sensor, then spin the wheel or crank to wake the sensor. Your Edge will detect and pair it automatically.

Connectivity

Can both sensors connect simultaneously to my cycling computer?

Yes — both sensors can be connected simultaneously to your Garmin cycling computer. They operate independently and transmit data concurrently without interference.

Can I connect the sensors to multiple devices at the same time?

Via ANT+, the sensors can broadcast to multiple devices simultaneously. Via Bluetooth Smart, each sensor can connect to one device at a time.

Do the sensors work with the Garmin Connect app?

The sensors pair directly with your Garmin cycling computer, which then syncs data to Garmin Connect via the app. The sensors do not connect directly to the Garmin Connect app on their own.

Battery & Maintenance

What battery do the Speed Sensor 2 and Cadence Sensor 2 use?

Both sensors use a CR2032 coin cell battery. Battery life is approximately one year with typical use (one hour per day).

How do I replace the battery?

Use a coin to unscrew the battery cover on the back of the sensor, replace the CR2032 battery with the positive side facing up, and reattach the cover. No tools are required.

Are the sensors waterproof?

Yes — both sensors are rated IPX7, meaning they are waterproof up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. They are suitable for use in rain and wet conditions.

Compatibility with Magene & Other Sensors

Can I use the Garmin Speed/Cadence Sensor 2 alongside a Magene S314?

Yes — if your cycling computer supports multiple sensor connections, you can run both simultaneously. However, most riders use one speed/cadence sensor at a time. The Garmin sensors and Magene S314 both use ANT+ and Bluetooth, so they are interchangeable depending on your preference.
